Medical Robots

Medical robotics is playing an increasing role assisting physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are information processing patterns for calculators that imitate the invention of biologic material systems, such as the brain. ANNs are made up of neurodes - information processing units that are formed with the basic features of living neurons. ANNs grew out of study in the discipline of simulated intelligence and are an enlarging sub-sector in the business of material engineering.

Complex, successful organisms will likely result from the synergistic operation of basic, automatic adaptive mechanisms. In the discipline of evolutionary robotics, these concepts are practical to robot design. Rather than creation robots whose components and software are fully specified, evobots are made with basic, adaptive mechanisms and selective reproductive capability. Over time, their programming adapts to their ecology.

In some respects, computers with neural networks program themselves. However, this is commonly not totally true. Generally the network learns from exposure to a set of education cases which, in turn, must be selected by an operator. Rather than completely "programming themselves," neural networks could be thought of as taking "general direction" from an operator, but exercising sizable substantive independence with respect to the details of how this general direction is followed.

An "Evobot" is a robot with the capacity to learn, adapt to changing surroundings, and selectively reproduce (in software and/or hardware) in a manner that imitates living organisms.
